About

The Laraway Road corridor has been identified as a priority location for improvement within the Chicago region, reflecting its critical role in regional mobility and freight movement. As one of the key east–west connections in the Joliet area, the corridor supports residents, commuters, and major freight operations. Today, frequent train crossings create significant delays, congestion, and safety concerns—particularly at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing east of Brandon Road and near IL Route 53.

The Phase I study focuses on refining the preferred alternative of a railroad (RR) overpass of the UP RR. Analysis from the previously adopted and PEL Study will be carried forward into Phase I. The Phase I study will include refined analysis of IL Route 53 and potential capacity improvements. Laraway Road will be developed as a four lane roadway which satisfies both the near term and future traffic demands. Non-vehicular travel will be addressed utilizing a multi-use path on the north side of Laraway Road.

The corridor also supports major regional employers and freight centers, including CenterPoint Intermodal Center and nearby industrial facilities. Addressing these conflicts will improve mobility, safety, and reliability for all roadway users.
